‘Faces of Kabul’ is a story of the men, women and children of Afghanistan and ISAF, the International Security Assistance Force and what it was doing in 2002. It was produced by invitation from the UK contingent of ISAF to Heartstone to ‘embed’ with some of the military peacekeeping units deployed there to capture a historic period of time. This was post 9/11, the international community had instigated a bombing campaign in Afghanistan as a result and the Taliban regime had fallen. This was a world of shattered buildings and lives, of unexploded ordnance and thousands of mines which were still leading to mutilation and death, but it was also a period of intense hope – schools were being rebuilt, girls going to school for the very first time, a world where something as simple as a pool game took on extraordinary significance. All this and more was captured in the story which won international acclaim for its portrayal of ordinary people, and was presented at the British Library and subsequently at the European Parliament and House of Commons.
